Using A Bird Feeder In An Urban Setting
By | February 21, 2011
As someone who lives in “the country”, I often hear people from heavily populated areas saying that it would seem a waste of time to bother putting up any type of bird feeder. On the surface that may make sense, however I always disagree with them. Living in a rural setting can sometimes make it harder to attract birds to a bird feeding station.
Keep in mind that birds that inhabit a rural area have a much wider availability of natural food sources. Within a few miles of my house for example there are many farms and wetland areas. These habitats provide a vast supply of food. Birds do not have to seek out my bird feeders.
City dwelling birds do not generally have these food sources readily available. They may take longer to locate your feeding station but will soon become regulars. You may have to get creative in placing your feeding station due to lack of space. The use of a window type feeder may be used in the case of apartment or condo type dwellings that are commonly found in cities like New York. Although the simplest of feeders they can provide a close up look at birds.
Keep in mind that many cities are have park areas that different types of birds are sure to live in. Some cities are also located in major migration routes. New York is a great example of this, New York is also close to the wetlands of NJ so there are plenty of interesting birds to attract and feed.

Winter Bird Feeding
By | February 1, 2011
There is nothing more rewarding than keeping our feathered friends happy and healthy during the cold winter months. The colorful feathers seem to stand out even more against the white snowy background. Beyond the visual beauty though, we must keep in mind the importance of a good, high quality diet.
Since there are basically no insects for them to eat and berries are getting scarce there needs must be met in a different way. Black oil sunflower seeds are a great overall seed to offer. The high calorie per ounce ratio that it carries is due to its high fat and protein content. Smaller birds can benefit from these seeds because they have thin shells and are easier to open. The thin shells are also less messy as the tend to blow away or decompose faster.
Suet, with its high energy, pure fat component makes it a great winter food to offer also. During the colder months birds need higher calorie foods to keep warm. Using suet cages allow easy access to these types of foods. Suet blocks with peanuts and other nuts are a great offering. Peanuts can also be placed in a “Peanut feeder”.
Water is also a key element in the winter to offer and may require a heated type water device.
